119 Passengers Escape Death as Tyres of Abuja-Bound Max Air Plane Burst During Take-Off.
A Max Air plane carrying 119 passengers and six crew members averted a major disaster during takeoff from the Yola Airport en route to Abuja on Sunday evening.
The aircraft, a Boeing 737 with registration 5N-ADB and flight number NGL1649, had all its four tyres burst during the takeoff roll and subsequent taxiing off the runway.

This was contained in a statement signed by Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, NSIB, where it was reported that the incident occurred as the aircraft was cleared for takeoff.
There was a loud bang during the takeoff roll, which later turned out to be the bursting of the rear gear tyres.
He, however, noted that two tyres initially burst. In the process of taxiing off the runway, the other two tyres burst to completely disable it. Luckily, he said, there was no injury or death recorded among the passengers and crew.

The statement added that a go-team, led by the NSIB Director General, Alex Badeh, will visit the incident site to conduct a detailed investigation into what could have caused the tyre bursts and to ensure all necessary safety procedures were followed.
This is coming barely a week after Max Air returned to the local scene after an audit by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
