Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo Biography Wikipedia.
On July 18, the Nigerian Air Force claimed that one of its Alpha planes had been shot down after coming under heavy fire from bandits operating between Kaduna and Zamfara states.
The tragedy takes the total number of military planes that have crashed in the last year to four, including this one.
The Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Lucky Irabor, commended the pilot of the downed Alpha Jet fighter aircraft, Flt. Lt. Abayomi Dairo, for his bravery.
In his meeting with the pilot, Irabor, who was in company with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao, before travelling to a meeting with military veterans in the North-West, expressed gratitude to the pilot for the valour and bravery he had displayed in the fight against banditry.
An NAF spokesperson stated that “using his survival skills, the pilot, who came under severe ground fire from the bandits, was able to flee them and seek cover in surrounding settlements while waiting for sunset.”

Abayomi Dairo Biography Wikipedia.
There have been a number of plane crashes involving military aircraft this year, but this is the first that the Nigerian Air Force has attributed to bandits, according to the military.
When a jet crashed in May, killing the Nigerian Army’s top general and ten other officers, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru was among those who died.
An Alpha Jet had crashed in the Nigerian state of Borno, which is one of the regions where Boko Haram militants are most active, a month earlier.
The military, on the other hand, denied that it was as a result of terrorist action.
Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo: Epitome of skillful, gallant officer whose god is awake

According to the narratives available on traditional and social media platforms, the young officer’s experience is not only chilling and frightening, but also distressing. The tale of his mysterious escape from the bandits’ lair can cause anyone to tremble with dread, even if it is based solely on imagination.

The combatant officer, unlike many before him, traversed the valley of the shadow of death multiple times in a row, but fought his way out and returned safely to the Air Force base to tell his story to the world by himself.
According to the record, not many people had been so fortunate. The combination of divine providence, physical fitness, youthful vigour, and expert knowledge made him a living testimony.
According to the Director of Public Relations and Information for the Nigerian Air Force, Edward Gabkwet, Pilot Dairo, who had just completed a successful air interdiction mission between the boundaries of the states of Zamfara and Kaduna, ejected from the aircraft as it was about to crash.
As it was not a venture undertaken by a coward, the courageous pilot took his fate into his own hands, conversed with his legs, and began racing for his life over a distance of approximately 30 kilometres. When my aircraft was struck by explosives and my flight controls were destroyed, I had no choice but to eject. I just said to God, at last, here we are.
“As the bandits surrounded me, I continued to pray and beseech God to answer your prayers because I knew you were all praying for me. And I give thanks to God for bestowing His love upon me and for rescuing me from death multiple times throughout the period.
Even at close range, they were more interested in capturing me than shooting me. Even with one strained leg, He gave me the strength to run and walk almost 30 kilometres. Having gone without food and water for the entire day, I prayed for strength, which God granted me.
Dairo had to improvise with his phone capabilities in order to navigate through the bandit enclave to the nearby settlements where he sought refuge prior to the Air Force’s eventual intervention.
Gabkwet confirmed the account, stating, “Fortunately, the aircraft’s valiant pilot, Flight Lieutenant Abayomi Dairo, successfully ejected from the aircraft. The pilot, who was under intense fire from the bandits, used his survival instincts to evade them and seek refuge in nearby settlements until sunset.
“Using the cover of night and his phone for navigation, Flight Lieutenant Dairo was able to avoid several bandit strongholds and make his way to a Nigeria Army Unit, where he was eventually rescued.
This display exemplified skill, bravery, and valour. And based on his personal experience, he concluded that the bandits were as ruthless as the Boko Haram insurgents. While the bandits were hotly pursuing him, he reported that they murdered several people and attacked so many settlements along the path, leaving him to ponder the semantic difference between them and the obstinate insurgents.

In a bureaucratic context, the two terms are frequently used interchangeably to describe a different scenario. In reality, however, bandits and insurgents are identical.
Although their methods of operation may vary, their ultimate objective is human life. Both have also reached an alarming level of sophistication, which should ordinarily serve as a wake-up call for the authorities to begin re-strategizing for more proactive measures against the national security threat.
The issue of security is a work in progress, as it is in other parts of the world. In Nigeria, it is impossible to calculate the amount of human and material resources that have been wasted in the fight against insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, and other forms of criminality.
There have been no less than three major plane crashes involving military personnel in the last six months of this year alone. On February 21, a Nigeria Air Force King Air 350 en route to Minna, the capital of Niger State, crashed near the Abuja airport, killing all seven young officers on board.
On Wednesday, March 31, 2021, exactly one month after the previous incident, another Alpha-Jet aircraft on a mission against Boko Haram vanished from the radar, only for the insurgent group to later release a video depicting the crashed jet and the bodies of the two unfortunate officers onboard.
The most recent incident was the crash of a Beechcraft 350i in Kaduna, which resulted in the deaths of Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru and 11 others, including three generals, two majors, and army and flight crew officers.
Therefore, the frequency and nature of these incidents highlight the need for regular and intensive training courses for Air Force officers and routine maintenance of the standby fleets.
Otherwise, the trend could create a climate of mass hysteria among the combatant officers’ rank and file.
Even the pilot who miraculously survived the crash on July 18 did not conceal the fact that he had a premonition of his impending death days before the Nigerian military assigned him to the mission.
After the incident, the aircraft was reduced to a wreckage, but he survived. Dairo’s place in the pantheon of heroes has been cemented by his most recent triumphant voyage.
