APC Prepares for Leadership Transition: Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje and Senator Ajibola Basiru to Take Key Roles”
The upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to confirm Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as the national chairman and Senator Ajibola Basiru as the national secretary.
This decision was reached through a consensus after the departure of former chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and secretary, Senator Iyiola Omisore.

The endorsement of Ganduje and Basiru was solidified during a meeting of the Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF), led by Governor Hope Uzodimma. Following this, the APC governors and other party leaders, including members of the National Caucus, held a meeting to finalize the decisions.
Despite the expectation that the nominees will be ratified by the national convention, the APC constitution empowers the NEC to act in emergency situations, assuming the functions of the convention.

Article 13(ii) of the APC constitution designates the national convention as the final authority of the party, responsible for ratifying policies, electing or removing national officers, and preparing its agenda. However, the NEC can assume these functions in between conventions.
Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, a prominent figure in the party and country, has served as the governor of Kano State for two terms and previously held the position of Kano State deputy governor.
Senator Ajibola Basiru, a holder of a doctorate degree in Law, has served as a Commissioner for Special Duties and Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice in Osun State. He was elected as a Senator from Osun Central District in 2019 and served as the Senate spokesman.
The departure of Senator Abdullahi Adamu and Senator Iyiola Omisore from their respective positions as chairman and secretary was prompted by complaints about their leadership lacking accountability and inclusivity.
They were also accused of neglecting important party organs by not holding regular NWC meetings and not adhering to the party constitution regarding NEC.
Salihu Lukman, the APC National Vice Chairman (Northwest), commented on the resignations, stating that disloyal and subversive leadership cannot be tolerated in the party.
He supported President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s endorsement of Ganduje as the next national chairman, considering Ganduje’s loyalty and capability. However, Lukman also stressed the importance of adhering to the earlier agreed-upon zoning formula and ceding the office of the National Chairman to the Northcentral.
The APC’s NEC is expected to ratify Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje as the national chairman and Senator Ajibola Basiru as the national secretary during their upcoming meeting. The party aims to ensure a smooth transition and maintain continuity in the party leadership, while also considering the importance of adhering to the zoning arrangement for the composition of the leadership positions.
