The Abia State Government has announced that it will commence the implementation of the new minimum wage for civil service workers starting in October 2024.
This was disclosed by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following the Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu emphasized that the initiative reflects the state government’s dedication to improving the welfare of Abia workers, fulfilling Governor Otti’s promise.
“Barring unforeseen circumstances, the Abia State Government will start paying the minimum wage to workers from October 2024. This demonstrates the government’s commitment to workers’ welfare and aligns with the Federal Government’s broader agenda,” Kanu stated.

In addition to the minimum wage implementation, the government is set to strengthen the state’s justice system by constructing 17 new court halls across all Local Government Areas (LGAs).
Governor Otti’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, will also launch a free medical outreach on Wednesday at the SDG Multipurpose Hospital in Ugwunagbo.
The initiative will include consultations, maternal and child healthcare services, free diagnostic tests, and minor surgeries. Women, children, and the elderly will also be enrolled in the Abia State Health Insurance Scheme during the outreach.
