The alleged release allegedly issued by the Director of Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, stated that the CBN issued the directive after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, February 21.
“Due to the current and unpleasant situation in Nigeria, the Central Bank of Nigeria has been directed to only reissue and recirculate the old N200, N500, and N1,000 banknotes until May 1, 2023.
This is to be done in accordance with Mr. President, after a closed meeting with him on February 20, 2023.
“The public should therefore continue to spend the old currency,” read the statement.
CBN Debunks the statement of Aisha Buhari
In a statement signed by Nwanisobi, the CBN dismissed the report in response.
The statement reads, “The Central Bank of Nigeria has been made aware of some fake and unauthorized messages claiming that the CBN has authorized Deposit Money Banks to collect the old N500 and N1,000 banknotes.
For the avoidance of doubt, and in accordance with Mr. President’s broadcast of February 16, 2023, the CBN has been instructed to ONLY reissue and recirculate the old N200 banknotes, which are expected to circulate as legal tender until April 10, 2023, a period of 60 days.
