Anambra threatens to arrest parents whose children hawk, beg

The Anambra State Government threatened parents and guardians whose wards are caught hawking and begging on the street with arrest and prosecution over the weekend.

Mrs. Ify Obinabo, state commissioner for women and social welfare, explained during this year’s International Day of Families celebration that the action would ensure the survival, proper development, and protection of every child in the state.

The Commissioner stated that her ministry would continue to educate parents on the importance of sending their children to school and giving their upbringing top priority, describing education and proper upbringing of children as the only way to eliminate poverty and crime in the society.

She added, “These children require care, love, support, and a sense of belonging, not abuse or domestic labour.”
