Under the terms of the waiver, university lecturers will receive salaries for four months out of the eight months that the strike lasted. The approval was granted based on the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy. It aims to alleviate some of the difficulties faced during the implementation of key economic reforms in the country.

The statement further specified that President Tinubu approved the waiver with a condition attached.

Both the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment are required to secure a Document of Understanding (DoU) from ASUU. This document is expected to confirm that this will be the last time such a waiver is granted by the federal government.

This decision comes in recognition of the commitment by ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria to uphold the terms agreed upon during their discussions, which led to the fruitful resolution of the strike. It is a significant move aimed at rebuilding the relationship between the government and the academic union while also addressing the issues that have affected the education system.
