Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted to the admission by the Nigerian Army that live ammunition was used on protesters. He, in a post on his X page, commended the Nigerian Army for apprehending the individuals who used lethal force on peaceful protesters.
“I am heartened by the admission made by the Nigerian Army over this tragic incident that led to the killing of a young protester,” Atiku said.

“In like manner, I call for proper investigations into other cases of violence by the military, police, and other security agencies during the protests,” in the spirit of accountability.
He lauded the army for arresting the offending soldier in a manner that upholds accountability within the rule of law. He went further to explain that such was putting the principle to action and that was how the soldier was being prosecuted.
“I have consistently counselled the service chiefs and military commanders that live ammunition must not be used on peaceful protesters,” Atiku wrote. “Indeed, upholding the principle of accountability, the soldier who pulled the trigger has been arrested and, unless reports received are not true, is about to be prosecuted.”
Atiku also emphasized the fact that there are rules of engagement to be followed, even in the case of conflicts, and urged that the military should never be sent to quell demonstrations on civil rights. His comments point to growing, wide demands for justice and human rights conformity in handling protests across the country.
