Obasanjo’s image should be on redesigned naira note – Atiku

One of the three naira notes that are going to be redesigned, according to , the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, should have a picture of former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

In a series of tweets on Saturday, Atiku also praised the 85-year-old elder statesman who serves as the African Union’s mediator for facilitating peace talks between the Ethiopian government and the Tigrayan rebels following two years of devastating conflict that left millions in need of aid in Africa’s second-most populous nation.

In a statement released this week, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and the government of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed decided to “permanently silence the guns” and put an end to the two-year struggle in northern Ethiopia.

On November 4, 2020, the crisis broke out when Nobel Peace Prize winner Abiy ordered soldiers into Tigray after charging the local government TPLF with attacking federal army facilities.

On Saturday, Atiku praised Obasanjo for his “extraordinary prowess” in establishing peace in Ethiopia.

“I am not shocked. My boss is someone I am familiar with. During our administration, he carried out the similar actions in Liberia and So Tomé and Prncipe, according to the PDP candidate.

Between May 1999 and May 2007, while Obasanjo was president by democratic election, Atiku served as Nigeria’s vice president.

Despite some difficulties during their second terms in power, Obasanjo and Atiku eventually worked out their disagreements.

When nominations are accepted, I will put him forward as a nominee because, if nothing else, he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

“Africa is fortunate to have a leader with Chief Obasanjo’s sterling democratic credentials. To motivate future generations of Nigerians to make sacrifices for their country and continent, a man whose image needs to be on the redesigned Naira note should be honoured, he continued.

As of December 15, 2022, the Central Bank of Nigeria () will begin issuing redesigned N200, N500, and N1,000 notes.

The existing notes will continue to be legal tender and circulate alongside the new ones until January 31, 2023, according to a statement made by Governor Godwin on October 26.

In the past few months, Obasanjo has had visits from Atiku and other leading presidential contenders including Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP) at his Abeokuta home.

The previous chief of state of the military, however, has not endorsed any candidates.
