The 2023 BET Awards took place on Sunday, honoring the best performances in music, TV, film, and sports. SZA and Beyoncé emerged as the top winners, with each artist taking home three awards. They even tied for the Album of the Year Award. The event was held live at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and marked the 50th anniversary celebration of Hip Hop. Busta Rhymes was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his contributions to the genre.
During the ceremony, Patti LaBelle graced the stage to pay tribute to Tina Turner, although she seemed to have forgotten the words to “Simply the Best.”
SZA’s accomplishments extended beyond the Album of the Year Award. She also secured the titles of Best Female R&B/Pop Artist and won the Video of the Year for her song “Kill Bill.” Meanwhile, Beyoncé’s “Break My Soul” triumphed in two categories: Viewers Choice Award and BET Her Award.
In the Male R&B/Pop Artist category, there was a tie between Chris Brown and Usher, both deserving of the honor.
In the realm of film, Disney/Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” claimed the title of Best Movie, while Angela Bassett, who appeared in the film, won the Best Actress award. Damson Idris received recognition as the Best Actor.
Drake emerged victorious with two wins, as he and GloRilla had the most nominations overall, each earning seven.
At the event, Nigerian superstars Burna Boy and Tems stood out as winners, while the talented singer Davido delivered an electrifying performance.
Tems was honored in the Best Collaboration category for her contribution to the Grammy award-winning song “Wait For U” alongside Future and Drake
Among the notable moments of the night was the reunion of Offset and Quavo, paying homage to the late Migos member, Takeoff. Muni Long also took the opportunity to acknowledge the importance of writers amidst the WGA strike.
