Prominent Catholic priest, Bishop Matthew Kukah, has addressed the various degrees of pain that Nigerians are enduring due to certain federal government policies. His comments came on Wednesday, May 15, following a private meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Speaking to journalists, Bishop Kukah acknowledged that many of the sufferings experienced by Nigerians during Tinubu’s administration were unintentional. He noted, “So many people will tell you that one year is not enough to make a judgment. However, from where we all stand, we know that we are all in a very difficult situation.”
He elaborated on the current state of the nation, emphasizing that Nigerians are experiencing unintended hardships. “Nigerians are in various levels of pain; pains that are unintended. There are also certain policy decisions that, hopefully, can be amended in order to serve the welfare of the ordinary people,” Kukah stated.
Bishop Kukah underscored the primary responsibility of the government to ensure the welfare of its citizens, especially during challenging times. He expressed hope that the government would improve communication to give Nigerians a clearer understanding of how long the current difficulties might last.

“My argument has always been that the government needs to, very quickly, improve the quality of communication so that Nigerians can get a sense of how long it will take before food is ready,” he added.
Kukah also highlighted the need for perseverance and a commitment to building a better society, noting that significant changes cannot happen overnight.
“But this is also a time for renewal; we just need to commit ourselves to building a good society. It takes a lot of time and cannot be done in one lifetime. For me, the most important thing is to continue on the building blocks of things that are being done well,” he concluded.
