Benjamin Kalu withdraws from race to be Speaker
Benjamin Kalu, the lawmaker representing Bende federal constituency in Abia State, has withdrawn from the race for Speaker of the House of Representatives.
This comes a day after the All Progressives Congress (APC) officially announced the zoning formula for the 10th National Assembly.
Kalu, on the other hand, has declared his intention to run for the position of Deputy Speaker.

“I believed this position was ideal for the Southeast region, as it has not produced a Speaker in the last 40 years,” he said in a statement issued by his media aide.
“However, as a firm believer in Party supremacy, I have decided to withdraw my candidature for the Speakership Position and fully accept the nomination for the position of Deputy Speaker of the 10th Assembly in line with the directives of our Party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

The APC has backed Godswill Akpabio for Senate President and Jibrin Barau for Deputy.
Abbas Tajudeen has been elected House Speaker, and Ben Kalu has been named Deputy Speaker.
