President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria has granted approval for the delay of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.

In a recent development, it has been reported that the census, which was originally slated to take place from May 3-7, 2023, has been postponed. The decision to delay the census was approved by the concerned authorities and it will now be rescheduled by the incoming administration.

Following a meeting with select members of the Federal Executive Council and the Chairman of the National Population Commission, Nasir Isa-Kwarra, and his team at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Friday, April 28, 2023, the President has granted approval.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has released a press statement on Saturday morning, according to the document signed by him.

According to a statement released by the authorities, the decision to postpone the census was made after a meeting where the importance of conducting a Population and Housing Census was emphasised. The last census was conducted 17 years ago, and there is a critical need for up-to-date data to drive the developmental goals of the country and improve the living standard of the Nigerian people.

According to Mohammed, President Buhari has expressed satisfaction with the progress made in the preparation and implementation of the census, which has been postponed. The President reportedly praised the National Population Commission (NPC) for its methodology, which he believes will ensure an accurate and reliable census.

 

 

In a recent statement, the President highlighted significant strides in the execution of the 2023 Population and Housing Census. The completion of the Enumeration Area Demarcation, along with the successful completion of the first and second pre-tests, recruitment and training of ad hoc workers, and procurement of Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) and ICT infrastructures, have all contributed to this progress.

The individual praised the Commission’s methodology for conducting a precise and dependable Census. They specifically highlighted the extensive use of technology, which has the potential to produce a Census of international standards and establish a strong foundation for future censuses.

Top government officials including the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of State, Budget and National Planning, Mr Clem Agba, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr Boss Mustapha, were in attendance at the meeting, according to a statement.
