FG finally commences evacuation of Nigerians from Sudan to Egypt after Tuesday’s failed promise

Following the outbreak of conflict in the North African country, the Federal Government has confirmed the beginning of the evacuation of Nigerians stranded in Sudan.

On Wednesday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, and his counterpart, the Minister of State, Zubairu Dada, confirmed it while briefing State House Correspondents on the latest crisis developments.

Onyeama disclosed that 40 luxury buses were already on the ground in Sudan to transport Nigerian nationals to Egypt, where they would be airlifted back to Nigeria.

He stated that the evacuation efforts are being coordinated by the Nigerian embassy in Sudan and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FERMA) officials.

According to the Ministers, the buses used to transport our citizens cost $1.2 million, which included the cost of providing security while transporting them to Egyptian soil.

Additionally, both ministers emphasised that women and children will be given priority, including diplomats who are equally involved in the evacuation’s logistics.

They noted that the Nigerian government was utilising the 72-hour ceasefire agreement to evacuate as many citizens as possible.

Ambassador Dada stated that the Saudi Arabian government had already evacuated some Nigerians to safety via sea, and that once the situation has stabilised, plans will be made to transport them back to Nigeria.
