Since his arrest in Kenya and return to Nigeria in June 2021, Kanu has been in the Department of Security Service’s (DSS) custody in Abuja.
The remaining six counts brought by the federal government against the IPOB leader were dropped by the Court of Appeal on October 13, which then granted his release.
In order to allow for the conclusion of an appeal it filed with the Supreme Court, the federal government had asked the Court of Appeal to halt the execution of the verdict releasing Kanu.
The demonstrators, who were primarily young people, demanded Kanu’s immediate release, calling his arrest and detention utterly inappropriate and unjustified.
