Nationwide Blackout as Electricity Workers Strike in Solidarity with Assaulted NLC President
Electricity workers across Nigeria have paralyzed the national grid, causing a widespread blackout as part of a strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).
The protest is in response to the assault on Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, which occurred on November 1, 2023, in Imo State.
Ndidi Mbah, the spokesperson for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), confirmed the strike on Tuesday.

She revealed that members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), who are electricity workers, adhered to the directives of the NLC and withdrew their services at approximately 11:20 am on Monday.
“Electricity workers are NLC members; they’ve followed the directive by organised labour to withdraw their services from Tuesday,” stated Mbah.
As a result of the strike, the Federal Capital Territory and its surroundings are currently experiencing a blackout, with the shutdown of the national grid impacting electricity supply across the country.

The strike comes in defiance of a court order that restrained the NLC and Trade Union Congress (TUC) from embarking on a nationwide indefinite strike.
Despite the legal injunction, the organized labor unions proceeded with their planned industrial action, underscoring the intensity of their protest against the assault on Joe Ajaero.
The situation raises concerns about the potential consequences of the blackout on various sectors and underscores the ongoing tensions between labor unions and the government.
