The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) is set to hold a National Executive Council meeting following the recent increase in the pump price of fuel by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

Ejes Gist News reports that the NNPCL has raised the price of Premium Motor Spirit, commonly known as petrol, to N1,030 per litre in Abuja, up from N897; N998 in Lagos, previously N855; N1,070 in the North-East; N1,025 in other South-West states; N1,045 in the South-East; and N1,075 in the South-South.

This decision has sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians, many of whom are urging President Bola Tinubu to reverse the price hike.

In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero addressed the situation, stating that the Congress executives will meet to discuss the matter by next week at the latest. He emphasized that every organization has its own procedures and that the NLC President does not have the authority to unilaterally declare a strike.

“Now, we have our own initial and administrative processes for convening a meeting at the earliest possible time, where a decision on the next course of action will be determined,” Ajaero stated.

He added, “No NLC President will announce that we are going on strike tomorrow or the day after without the necessary organs meeting, either the Central Working Committee (CWC) or the National Executive Council (NEC). We are following that process.”

Ajaero concluded, “By next week, we should be able to meet and discuss this matter so that the personal views of the leader do not cloud the positions of the members.
