NLC and TUC Announce Suspension of Nationwide Strike After Crucial Government Commitments.

 

In a significant development, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly announced the suspension of the ongoing nationwide strike.

The decision was made following an emergency joint National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held on the 15th day of November 2023.

During the meeting, a thorough review of the offers presented by the federal government, through the National Security Adviser, was conducted. The strike, which commenced on the 14th of November 2023, was initiated in response to the distressing abduction and brutalization of NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and others.

These incidents occurred in Owerri, Imo state, on the 1st day of November 2023, allegedly at the hands of the Police and thugs associated with Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The government, through the National Security Adviser (NSA), issued an apology and pledged to coordinate an investigation into the incidents. Assurances were given that the perpetrators would be prosecuted, with some already arrested. A high-powered investigation is underway, and continuous briefings will be provided to the leadership of the labour centers as progress is made.

In a joint statement, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja Esq., the General Secretary of NLC, and Comrade Nuhu Toro, the Secretary-General of TUC, commended all affiliates and state councils for their commitment and tenacity, which contributed to the success of the nationwide strike.

The statement directed all affiliates and state councils of both the NLC and TUC to demobilize and cease any further escalation of the indefinite strike action. Workers are instructed to fully resume work on Thursday, the 16th day of November 2023.

The leadership expressed appreciation for the cooperation, resilience, and determination of workers, encouraging them to remain vigilant as they await the fulfillment of the remaining agreements.
