Edo Train Attack: The Nigeria Railway Corporation made the announcement on Sunday that the Ekehen Train Station in Edo State would be closed indefinitely until further notice.

The organisation stated that the decision had to be made because of the increasing number of threats to security.

It had been less than a year since the bandits’ attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 14 passengers and the kidnapping of 65 others. The current incident took place less than a year after that attack.

Our correspondent was able to obtain a copy of an announcement that was made public by the NRC and posted on the passengers’ WhatsApp Group. The announcement stated that the closure would continue “until further notice.”

The following is an excerpt from the announcement that was made public: “Public Announcement: This is to inform our general public and most especially our esteemed passengers that Ekehen Station has been temporarily closed due to security issues, till further notice.”

Another notice states that “WITS 01/02 will no longer stop at Ekehen Station due to the incident that occurred there on Saturday.” Kindly inform our clients of the situation.”

Recall that a train station in Igueben, located in Edo State, was attacked by individuals suspected of being armed with firearms. As a result, an unknown number of passengers have been kidnapped.

It has been confirmed by the Edo state police command that a group of gunmen armed with AK-47 rifles stormed the train station at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 7th.

The gunmen shot erratically and kidnapped an unknown number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.

According to the Edo state police Command, the Area Commander Irrua, the DPO of Igueben Division, and other men of the police have visited the scene of the crime along with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters in order to protect the lives and property of the remaining passengers.

This was done with the intention of ensuring the safety of the remaining passengers.

According to the police, operations known as “bush combing” have begun in an effort to rescue the victims and apprehend the kidnappers who are currently on the run.
