Breaking: Only 422 Delegates Were Sponsored to COP28, Says Mohammed Idris

The Federal government through it’s minister for information Mohammed Idris, communicated to journalist in response to the criticism surrounding Nigeria’s substantial delegation at the COP28 Climate Summit in Dubai.The Bola Tinubu-led administration has clarified that the federal government-sponsored 422 delegates.

The statement, issued by Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, emphasized that Nigeria’s representation aligns with its status as a leading African player in climate action amid over 70,000 participants from 100+ countries.

”Parties to this Convention from Nigeria include government officials, representatives from the private sector, civil society, the voluntary sector, state governments, media, multilateral institutions, representatives of marginalised communities, and many others.

”It is imperative to point out that the overall Nigerian delegation to COP-28 comprises Government-sponsored (Federal and State Governments) and non-government-sponsored participants (from Private Companies, NGOs, CSOs, Media, academia, etc),” the minister added.

Minister Mohammed Idris stressed the distinction between government-sponsored (Federal and State Governments) and non-government-sponsored participants from private companies, NGOs, CSOs, media, and academia.

The breakdown of the Federal Government-funded delegation is as follows:

1. National Council on Climate Change = 32
2. Federal Ministry of Environment = 34
3. All Ministries = 167
4. Presidency = 67
5. Office of the Vice President = 9
6. National Assembly = 40
7. Federal Parastatals/Agencies = 73

This clarification comes in the wake of public outcry over the inclusion of President Tinubu’s sons and media personality Toke Makinwa in the delegation.
