President Bola Tinubu has given his nod to a bill increasing the salary of judicial officers by 300 percent at both federal and state levels in the country.

 

Ejes Gist News reports that Tinubu gave assent to the Judicial Office Holders Salaries and Allowances Bill on Tuesday.

 

This development has been confirmed in a statement issued in Abuja today by the Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, Senator Basheer Lado.

The National Assembly had in June approved the bill that provided a whooping 300% salary increase for judicial officers.

The move was taken after consideration and adoption of an executive bill the President sponsored, which sought to provide more attractive salaries, allowances, and fringe benefits for judicial officers and staff.

 

The President’s executive bill was captioned: “A Bill for an Act to Prescribe the Salaries, Allowances, and Fringe Benefits of Judicial Office Holders in Nigeria and for Related Matters.”.

 

According to Lado, “This remarkable move underscores Mr. President’s absolute prioritization of the welfare of Nigerian workers above all else, just like he did when he recently put on hold an ongoing Federal Executive Council meeting to assent to the new National Minimum Wage Bill of N70,000.

He said that the “New Act prescribes Salaries, Allowances etc., for Judicial Officers to reflect the changing realities and consequential amendment of the provisions of the Certain Political, Public and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.), Act, No.6, 2002 (as amended) deleting the provisions relating to Judicial Office Holders”.

 

Lado further said among the salient features of the Act, include, “The prescription of salaries, allowances, and other benefits for Judicial Officers.

“The amendment of Certain Political, Public, and Judicial Office Holders (Salaries and Allowances, etc.) Act, No.6, 2002 (as amended) which provides for the deletion of provisions relating to Judicial Office Holders from the aforementioned Act.”

 

He described the signing of the bill by the President as a landmark achievement, saying it epitomized his unwavering commitment to the welfare of workers in Nigeria.

Lado said, “His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCON, in a most brilliant exhibition of his quite imaginative leadership and deep compassion for the Nigerian people, has further confirmed his unrelenting commitment to the welfare of the nation’s workforce by assenting to the revised Salaries and Allowances for Judicial Office Holders.”.

Lado commended the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon Abass Tajudeen, for their untiring efforts at making sure improvement in Nigerians’ welfare is constantly done.

 

He also praised the 10th National Assembly lawmakers for their zeal, ensuring Nigerians’ interests were prioritized by rapidly passing and forwarding the executive Bill, subsequently endorsed by the President.

 

Further to this, he charged the nation’s Judicial Office Holders with increased efforts in the dispensation of justice, considering current presidential initiatives focused on raising their general welfare and standard of living.

 

“The judiciary remains the hope of the common man, and it is hoped that Nigerians who seek justice get it irrespective of their status in life,” he said.

Under the new law, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, would now earn an annual salary of N64 million.

 

While the President of the Court of Appeal will receive ₦62.4 million, every Justice of the Supreme Court is to receive ₦61.4 million.

It was also agreed that all heads of different courts, such as the Chief Judge of Federal High Court, Chief Judge of Federal Capital Territory High Court, and President of National Industrial Court, would receive an annual remuneration of ₦7.9 million for all.
