The Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) has achieved a sweeping victory in the Abia State local government elections held on November 2, capturing 15 out of the 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs).
The remaining two LGAs were claimed by the Young Peoples Party (YPP), further highlighting the shifting political landscape in Abia State.
The election results were officially announced by the Chairman of the Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. George Chima, at the commission’s headquarters in Umuahia, the state capital.

Speaking on Saturday, Chima expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of the elections, despite significant challenges.
“We went above and beyond to ensure widespread awareness about the election across the state,” Chima stated, emphasizing the commission’s commitment to civic engagement. According to ABSIEC, the election saw the participation of more than 12 political parties, a record that Chima noted has been unprecedented in recent years.
Chima further affirmed that the electoral process was “free, fair, and credible,” underscoring that the elections were organized and completed within a swift timeline of just two months—a timeframe far shorter than the usual six to twelve months.
In his concluding remarks, the commission chairman extended his congratulations to the winning candidates, urging both the victors and the opposition parties to work toward sustaining peace and unity across Abia State.
