Asset declaration: CCB tells Tinubu, others to submit forms before May 29

 

The Code of Conduct Bureau has stated that the President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, the Vice President-elect, Kashim Shettima, and the 28 incoming governors must declare their assets by May 29.

 

Mrs Veronica Kato, the CCB’s spokesperson, stated this in an interview with Newsmen in Abuja.

Other officials, such as senators and representatives-elect, are expected to declare their assets before being sworn in on June 5.

According to the law, asset declaration is required as part of the swearing-in ceremony.

She revealed that several elected officials had begun collecting their asset declaration forms from CCB state offices across the country, and that they were expected to submit the completed copies to the bureau before the inauguration day.

 

Outgoing officials, including presidential aides, 28 state governors and their cabinet members, National Assembly and state assembly members, and local government chairpersons, will also obtain and submit asset declaration forms from the CCB in accordance with the 1999 constitution.

 

The constitution requires all public officers to declare their assets and liabilities upon taking office and again at the end of their term.

 

The affected officials must provide detailed information, including but not limited to the number, types, address, and value of properties declared, as well as the date of acquisition and income derived from the properties, where applicable.

The declarations are subject to CCB officers’ verification.

 

Failure to declare their assets as required by paragraph 11 of the 5th Schedule of the Federal Constitution results in removal from office, disqualification from holding any public office, and forfeiture of any property acquired in abuse of office or dishonesty to the state.

In response to questions about the number of elected officials who had obtained the forms, Kato stated, “We have previously revealed that the assets declaration is an ongoing process.” Currently, they are receiving their forms as they come in.

 

“However, I cannot specifically state the total number of elected officials who have collected their assets declaration forms or their names because they are obtained from our various offices across the country.”
