What they say

Guardiola, manager of Manchester City, stated, “We want to try.” It’s an honour to be here against a club like Bayern Munich, and I’m grateful for the opportunity. It isn’t taken for granted. You must earn it by performing well in both games.

“We want to try like we always do, but that doesn’t mean we’ll win.”

“It was the Masters yesterday.” In his 30-40 year career as a golfer, how many Masters or majors has Jack Nicklaus won? How many victories do you have out of a possible 164? Eighteen victories.

“Wow. He consistently loses more than he wins. That is what sports are all about. In football, golf, and basketball, for example.

“Michael Jordan, my favourite basketball player, won six NBA championships in 15 years.” He consistently loses more than he wins.

“Every game in this game is extremely difficult. What matters is that we show up, compete well, and give it our all. That’s all there is to it.”

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel: “We have a big task ahead of us.” They [City] are our current gold standard.

“We want to live up to that, but the team has earned the right to be confident based on our results and performances in the Champions League thus far, and we must try to maintain that.”

“Perhaps we play the role of a minor underdog, which isn’t a problem. We’ll do our best to make the most of it. We must be confident and at the top of our game.”

“Losing is part of football,” says Benfica coach Roger Schmidt. But we’d won a lot before that, and we learn from both wins and losses. My team quickly put the loss to Porto behind them.”

“Benfica lost two games all season, but they will find an Inter team that knows what it wants and knows the match it has to play,” Inter coach Simone Inzaghi said.

“We need a brain-heart connection.” I have no doubts about the boys’ hearts; they’ve always had them. The head is extremely important.”
