Borno Flood Victims Allege Civilian JTF Rape, Brutalization Amid Food Shortages.
A disturbing allegation has surfaced as flood victims in Borno State accused members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (JTF) of rape and brutality at an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp. According to the victims, one woman was raped, and another was severely beaten, leaving her hospitalized in Maiduguri.

Speaking in Hausa during a live interview on Arise TV’s Good Morning Show, one of the victims narrated the harrowing experiences of those displaced by the floods. She described the dire conditions at the camp, highlighting acute food shortages and accusing the Civilian JTF of taking most of the food meant for the victims.
“We are suffering in the camp, there’s hardly enough food. The JTF members take most of the food that’s supposed to go to us,” she lamented, sharing her frustration and fear.

The incident comes at a time when the humanitarian crisis in Borno State has worsened due to devastating floods. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that no fewer than 414,000 people have been displaced by the flood in Maiduguri alone. The spokeswoman for OCHA in Abuja, Ann Weru, revealed this in a media advisory on Wednesday.
The UN resident and humanitarian coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed Malick Fall, is expected to address the media on the situation soon. According to Weru, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) reported that, as of September 11, the floods had claimed 37 lives and left 58 others injured.
The crisis has overwhelmed the IDP camps, where thousands of displaced persons are struggling with inadequate food supplies and shelter. The allegations of abuse by members of the Civilian JTF have further complicated the situation, raising concerns over the safety and well-being of those affected.
Authorities have yet to respond to the accusations, but the victims and humanitarian organizations are calling for urgent action to protect vulnerable individuals in the camps. As the floodwaters continue to wreak havoc, the need for immediate intervention grows more pressing by the day.
