Climate change: Nigerians should shun unserious leaders, President Buhari failed on flooding – Atiku

Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, has urged Nigerians to choose leaders who care deeply about addressing climate change.

After visiting Bayelsa, where catastrophic flooding has harmed lives, livelihoods, and property, the former vice president delivered the advice.

In order to improve forecasting and issue warnings, Atiku pledged to retool disaster awareness organizations like the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NHSA).

The PDP presidential candidate also suggested that NEMA should undergo restructuring to ensure proper planning and response.

In order to control the release of extra water from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, Atiku stated that attention will be paid to the Dasin-Hausa Dam in Adamawa State.

In order to stop flooding in the Niger Delta, the candidate emphasized the necessity of dredging rivers and estuaries via which interior waters flow into the sea.

“We will be living in the remnants of ages past, unaware of our associated vulnerabilities, if we get our politics wrong by electing leaders who choose to play politics with climate change and refuse to make required investments in sensible solutions,” he warned.

In managing the terrible flooding of 2022, Atiku charged the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari with lacking both leadership and compassion.

Indicating that climate change is genuine, he further urged all levels of government to take action to prevent anticipated food shortages and rising food prices.

However, the former vice president argued for the creation of a temporary fund for farmers to help them recover from losses and provide them with funding for the 2023 planting season.
