Court Discharges 36 #EndBadGovernance Protesters Unconditionally in Kano, Grants Bail to 35 Others

A Senior Magistrate Court in Kano State has discharged 36 #EndBadGovernance protesters unconditionally, while granting bail to 35 others. The decision was taken by the court, presided over by Hadiza Rabi’u Bello, after reviewing legal advice from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Ministry of Justice, Kano State.

 

The case, which involved over 70 protesters, was heard at the Senior Magistrate Court No. 33 in Gyadi-Gyadi, Kano. The protesters were represented by a coalition of lawyers from the Centre for Human Rights and Social Advancement (CEFSAN), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Ungogo Branch, the NBA Kano Branch, and the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.

This decision follows the nationwide protests under the #EndBadGovernance movement, which calls for improved governance and accountability. Legal representation for the protesters was robust, with civil rights organizations and bar associations advocating for their release.

 

According to a statement by CEFSAN, signed by Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo and obtained by SaharaReporters, the court discharged 36 protesters without conditions, while 35 were granted bail. The court has adjourned the case for further mention on October 9, 2024.

Meanwhile, it was revealed that another session will be held on Friday, September 13, 2024, at Goron Dutse Correctional Centre, Kano, where the fate of other protesters will be determined. The session will be presided over by His Worship Ibrahim Abubakar Mansur.

The legal proceedings highlight the continued push for civil rights in Nigeria, with attention now turning to the upcoming court date in October and the potential outcomes for the remaining protesters
