Creation Of Local Council Development Authority to Drive Grassroots Development in Cross River State.
In a bid to enhance sustainable development at the grassroots level and tap into the economic potential of rural communities, Elder Dr. Ndoma Odey, a prominent Accountant and Local Government Administration expert, has put forth a proposal that could reshape governance in Cross River state. Dr. Odey’s suggestion centers on the creation of 12 new Local Council Development Authorities (LCDAs), a move that he believes will have far-reaching positive impacts on the state’s development landscape.

The proposal, which has garnered attention from various quarters, aims to complement the ongoing efforts of the current administration to ensure the well-being of communities in Cross River state. The creation of these additional LCDAs would expand the existing structure of 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) to a total of 30, with each state constituency being eligible for one. This strategic approach seeks to bridge the gap between governance and rural areas, paving the way for expedited development.

One of the key challenges highlighted by Dr. Odey is the difficulty of adequately addressing the needs of the state’s population and its vast expanse with the current LGA structure. By establishing more LCDAs, the state government could ensure that development initiatives penetrate even the most remote corners of the region.

The proposal holds the promise of not only attracting development to rural areas but also streamlining administrative processes and addressing the aspirations of minority groups for self-governance.
Dr. Odey’s proposal draws inspiration from the success stories of other states such as Lagos, Ekiti, and Ebonyi, which have reaped significant benefits from similar initiatives. This move could spark a wave of healthy competition among different Council Areas, fostering growth, innovation, and a renewed focus on local development. Furthermore, the creation of these LCDAs is expected to generate employment opportunities for the youth, propel urbanization, bolster infrastructure projects, and offer a practical solution to longstanding intrastate boundary disputes.
