Cross River councillors suspended over alleged dishonesty and embezzlement.
Three members of the Akpabuyo Legislative Council have been placed on indefinite leave for theft, dishonesty, and severe misconduct.
They were charged with stealing N1.2 million provided by Ekeng Effiom Edet, a member of the State House of Assembly and representative of the Akpabuyo State constituency, which was meant for 10 councillors in the Akpabuyo legislative council.
The decision to suspend them was made in the legislative chamber on November 1, 2022, and it became effective yesterday.
The three Councilors are Hon. Etim Bassey Edet, who represents Edet Nsa Ward, Hon. Offiong Offiong Eyo, who represents Nakanda Ward and is the Deputy Majority leader, and Hon. Elijah Effiom Effanga, who represents Effanga Offiong Ward and is the majority leader of the Akpabuyo legislature.
In the Legislative Assembly, Queen Nyong Effiom, who represents Eneyo North Ward, moved for their suspension, describing the alleged behaviour as “ugly and criminal.”
It was done so in accordance with Council Resolution No. 23, which deals with the suspension of the three Councilors.
Other members of the Legislative Council scowled and denounced the actions of the three Councilors.

The councillor for the Edem Odo ward, Hon. Etim Okon Inyang, seconded Queen Nyong’s substantive motion as a result.
Their exclusion from plenary received the support of seven Councilors.
The council members will thus forfeit all of their benefits while they are suspended.
One of the suspended councillors, Offiong Offiong Eyo-Councilor, who represents the Nakanda ward, told journalists that the suspension had no bearing.
The suspension is inappropriate. Because the correct technique was not followed, it has no effect.
I can not be hung by my words, and no one can suspend me, he said.
Ekong Edet Uquo, the head of the Akpabuyo legislature, also said that their suspension will serve as a warning to others.
He made it clear that the council members’ conduct had gone against the moral principles of the legislature.
