Sulphur Content in Diesel:

  • Matrix: 2,631 ppm
  • Total: 1,829 ppm
  • Dangote: 87.6 ppm
  • Standard Specification: ≤ 50 ppm

Flash Point in Diesel:

  • Matrix: 63°C
  • Total: 26°C
  • Dangote: 96°C
  • Standard Specification: ≥ 66°C

The sulphur content in diesel from Matrix and Total exceeds the standard specification by a large margin, whereas Dangote’s diesel remains within acceptable limits, highlighting its higher quality. Additionally, the flash point values for Matrix and Total are below the required standard, indicating potential safety risks, while Dangote’s diesel exceeds the minimum requirement, demonstrating better stability and safety.

Industry Controversy

These findings come amid a heated debate between the Dangote Group and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA). Devakumar Edwin, vice president of oil and gas at Dangote Group, accused the NMDPRA of permitting the importation of substandard fuels into Nigeria. In response, NMDPRA chief Farouk Ahmed claimed that diesel from Dangote Refinery and other local refineries had high sulphur levels, making them inferior to imported products.

However, the recent lab tests contradict Ahmed’s claims, establishing Dangote’s diesel as a higher-quality option compared to its competitors. This revelation underscores the need for rigorous regulatory oversight to ensure that only high-quality fuels are distributed within Nigeria, thereby protecting consumer interests and environmental standards.
