Five people have tragically lost their lives, six others have sustained injuries, and twenty remain missing after a devastating boat accident in Warri South Local Government Area, Delta State.
Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, has been confirmed as one of the survivors of the tragic incident, which occurred on Tuesday. The news was revealed by Guwor’s Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, who shared details in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the statement, Speaker Guwor is still grappling with the shock of the incident. He was returning to Asaba after an engagement with constituents in Warri when the boat, which was ferrying him, narrowly avoided a head-on collision with another vessel.
The statement further conveyed the Speaker’s deep sorrow, expressing sympathy for the families of the deceased. “Mr. Speaker is deeply saddened by the tragic boat mishap that occurred over the weekend along Bennett Island River in Warri South-west Local Government Area of Delta State, in which he was involved but miraculously survived,” it read.
The mishap, which occurred on Friday afternoon, November 22, 2024, resulted in the loss of five lives, injuries to six others, and left twenty people unaccounted for. Guwor’s boat had almost collided with another vessel, leading to the deadly incident.
“Mr. Speaker extends his heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the mishap and prays for God’s strength for them during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement continued.

While still in shock, Speaker Guwor expressed gratitude for being spared from harm, thanking God for his survival and the safety of other passengers. He also acknowledged the swift actions of the rescue teams and medical personnel who responded promptly to the crisis.
Furthermore, Guwor called on the relevant authorities to launch a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the accident to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
He ended his statement by reiterating his condolences to the victims’ families and praying for the repose of their souls.
