Kaduna, Nigeria – In the early hours of Sunday, May 26, a train traveling from Kaduna to Abuja derailed at Jere in Kaduna state. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.
The train, which began its journey at 8:05 am, experienced the derailment halfway through its route. An unidentified number of passengers were on board when the incident occurred.

An official from the service, who requested anonymity, suggested that the derailment might be linked to vandalization of the rail tracks. He confirmed that no fewer than three coaches were affected by the derailment. Security personnel and officials from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) were promptly deployed to the site to investigate and manage the situation.
“We are thankful that the incident did not lead to any casualty,” the official said. “The coaches derailed in one of our stations where we have two lines. So, what we simply did was to detach the three coaches that were affected and move other coaches to the line that was not affected.”

The official assured that there would be no suspension of train services along the Abuja-Kaduna route. “Our engineers are already on the ground to fix the problem. The derailment did not affect our services significantly; we only experienced a few hours of delay to ensure the site was safe for other operations of the day.”
The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident and stated that normal services continue despite the derailment. “The management of the NRC hereby informs the general public, especially our valued passengers, that normal passenger train services between Kaduna-Rigasa and Idu-Abuja continue despite the minor derailment of our coach at Jere station this morning,” said Yakub Mahmood, NRC’s Deputy Director of Public Relations.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has deployed a team to the site to conduct a thorough investigation. “NSIB is aware of the derailment of an Abuja-bound train from Kaduna which occurred halfway into the journey at Jere. A go team has been deployed to the site of the incident,” stated the NSIB.
The NRC management expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and assured passengers of their commitment to safety and comfort.
