During a hearing before the coroner, Magistrate Adedayo Shotobi, Prof. Osiyemi explained that the autopsy could not determine the exact cause of Mohbad’s death.

He attributed this uncertainty to the prolonged period before the autopsy was performed, which was about 21 days after Mohbad’s burial. By this time, the body had significantly decomposed, making it difficult to obtain conclusive results.

Counsel for Mohbad’s family, Senior Advocate of Nigeria Wahab Shittu, further elaborated on the proceedings. He quoted Prof. Osiyemi as saying, “The body ought to have been exhumed within 12 hours after it was buried to avoid decomposition.”
Shittu highlighted that the inability to ascertain the cause of death leaves the circumstances suspicious and unclear.
Shittu also mentioned that the pathologist pointed to certain drugs administered to Mohbad before his death, which could have caused a reaction complicating the determination of the cause of death. However, Prof. Osiyemi clarified that it remains uncertain whether these drugs were directly responsible for Mohbad’s death.
The next hearing for the cross-examination of Prof. Osiyemi is scheduled for June 24, 2024.
Mohbad passed away on September 12, 2023, under controversial circumstances, sparking widespread speculation and demand for a thorough investigation.
