High Court Nullifies NNPP Primaries In Rivers, Sacks All State Assembly Candidates

14 House of Assembly candidates for the New Nigeria People’s Party in Rivers State have been dismissed by a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt as the 2023 elections get closer.

The party was fired by the court for “non-compliance” with the Electoral Act in how its primaries were conducted.

The NNPP candidates had been sued by the state’s ruling Peoples Democratic Party, which was seeking to have them disqualified.

The PDP was able to show the court that the opposition party did not adhere to the rules outlined in the new Electoral Act during their party primaries, according to the ruling of the presiding judge, Justice Turaki Muhammed.

The Independent National Electoral Commission was thus instructed by the judgement to stop recognising the impacted individuals as candidates.

This occurs just a few days after the court invalidated every primary held in the state by the All Progressives Congress due to the improper exclusion of some party members as primary delegates.

George Orlu and other state-based party members had asked the court to throw out the party primaries because they had been excluded.

The APC in Rivers has split into factions led by Rotimi Amaechi, a former minister of transportation, and Magnus Abe, a previous party candidate for governor.

Abe had switched parties and joined the Social Democratic Party (SDP), where he chose the governorship slate for the election the following year.

Most of the plaintiffs in the case are Abe supporters.
