The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Duoye Diri, the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as the official winner of the Bayelsa state governorship election. Diri secured a resounding victory with 175,196 votes, solidifying his re-election as the governor of Bayelsa.

 

The electoral landscape was marked by earlier tensions and the postponement of collation on Sunday. Politics Nigeria had initially reported Diri’s lead with 137,909 votes, while Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress (APC) trailed with 73,503 votes before the temporary halt in the collation process.

The results from two pivotal local governments, Brass and Southern Ijaw, had been pending before the postponement. In the subsequent collation on Monday, Sylva claimed victory in Brass with 18,431 votes, while Diri garnered 12,602 votes. Southern Ijaw echoed PDP’s dominance, with 24,685 votes, leaving the APC with 18,174 votes.
