EFCC replies Matawalle on alleged ‘$2m Bribe’
‘$2m Bribe’: We Won’t Be Drawn Into Mud Fight, EFCC replies Matawalle
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has stated that it will not engage in a mudslinging match with Zamfara State Governor Bello Matawalle.
The commission stated this in response to the accusation made by the governor against Abdulrasheed Bawa, the head of the anti-corruption agency.
Matawalle, who has recently engaged in heated exchanges with the EFCC, claimed that Bawa demanded a bribe of $2 million from him.

Matawalle insisted in an interview with BBC Hausa that Bawa could not be trusted.
“If he leaves office, everyone will know he is not an honest individual. I possess proof against him. Let him resign; I guarantee that within 10 seconds, more than 200 individuals will present evidence of bribes he accepted from them. He is aware of what he asked of me, but I declined.
“I have evidence that he requested a $2 million bribe from me. He invited me to the house where we met and explained the rules. He told me that governors would be visiting his office, but I did not observe this. Matawalle said, “If I don’t have evidence, I won’t say this.”

In a statement released on Friday, however, Wilson Uwujaren, spokesman for the anti-corruption agency, compared Matawalle to a drowning man.
He stated that the agency could not argue with a suspect and dared Matawalle to “go ahead and spill the beans.”

“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has been made aware of an interview given by Bello Muhammed Matawalle, governor of Zamfara State, to the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation, BBC, in which he allegedly made outrageous bribery allegations against the Executive Chairman of the Commission, Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa.”
“Matawalle’s mudslinging is indicative of a drowning man grasping for straws. Nevertheless, despite the annoyance of his phantom claims, the Commission will not engage in a mudslinging match with a suspect under investigation for corruption and unconscionable plunder of his state’s resources. If Matawalle wants to be taken seriously, he must go beyond empty threats and reveal the truth; he must provide concrete evidence to support his allegations.
“Once again, the Commission wishes to warn the public that some allegedly corrupt politically exposed persons are planning to flee the country prior to May 29. The Commission is collaborating closely with its international partners to foil these escape attempts and bring those responsible to justice.”
