EFCC to arrest APC senatorial candidate, AbdulKareem AbdulSalam Zaura over alleged US$1.3million Fraud
AbdulKareem AbdulSalam Zaura, a senatorial candidate for Kano Central under the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), is reportedly detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This information was provided to the media by EFCC attorney Ahmad Rogha on Monday during the resumption of the criminal trial for the US$ 1.3 million charge against Zaura at the Federal high court in Kano.
Zaura was supposed to report himself to the commission, according to the EFCC lawyer, even though the trial scheduled for arraignment could not proceed due to the trial judge’s absence because he had been scheduled to attend another national issue outside Kano.
He claimed, “We are looking for Zaura, and when we find him, he will be arrested. He should have been in our custody normally, and the court has confirmed that, but I can assure you that he would be detained and brought to court on the next postponed date of January 30, 2023.
In his counterargument, the accused’s attorney, Ibrahim Garba Waru, criticised the EFCC’s position and insisted that the agency lacked the legal authority to detain his client.

Waru claimed that Zaura did not need to show up because the court was not in session when questioned about why he skipped the arraignment.
The trial judge, Justice Mohammad Yunusa, ordered EFCC to present the accused for arraignment on the charge of fraud against a Kuwaiti national prior to the adjourned date.
Zaura’s application, which questioned the court’s authority to hear the case and other concerns about whether the accused must personally appear to enter a plea, was rejected by Justice Yunusa.
Zaura’s lawyer, Barrister Ibrahim Waru, had argued that his client was not required by law to appear before the court and that the Supreme Court was currently hearing her appeal.
The arraignment has been postponed until January 30, 2023.
