Ekweremadu News: More Trouble for Ekweremadu, Court Orders Interim Forfeiture of 40 Properties Globally

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Friday obtained a court order for the interim forfeiture of 40 landed properties owned by the troubled Senator in various locations around the world while the former Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, and his wife, Beatrice, are on trial at a London Court for alleged trafficking of a minor to the UK with the intention to harvest his organ.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), a group that promotes civil rights, immediately criticized the timing of the case and order, alleging that it was done to thwart Ekweremadu’s bid for bail in London.

After Ibrahim Buba on behalf of the EFCC filed and advanced an ex-parte motion, Justice Inyang Ekwo of a Federal High Court in Abuja issued the forfeiture order.

The judge ruled that the anti-graft agency had seven days from the moment the judgement was made to announce the temporary forfeiture order of the properties.

Anyone with an interest in the properties covered by the interim forfeiture order was particularly asked by Justice Ekwo to let the court know within 14 days of the order’s publication.

Justice Ekwo postponed the hearing to December 5, 2022, so that he could report on any public opposition to the properties.

The interim forfeiture ruling includes ten properties owned by Ekweremadu in Enugu, three in the USA, two in the UK, one in Lagos, nine in Dubai, and fifteen in Abuja.

According to the decision, anybody who are interested in the properties affected by the interim forfeiture order must inform the court of their arguments for why they should not be permanently forfeited to the federal government within 14 days of the newspaper publication.

The former vice-president of the senate and his wife are currently on trial in the UK for accused organ harvesting.

The alleged victim, who was not a juvenile, freely offered to donate his organ for Ekweremadu’s daughter, who is presently ill and receiving treatment in a London hospital, according to Ekweremadu and his wife, who had entered a not guilty plea to the case.

Despite the fact that the court had granted Beatrice bail, Ekweremadu was not permitted to post bail.
