Port Harcourt, Rivers State – A protest in Port Harcourt turned deadly when a middle-aged demonstrator carrying dynamite was killed in an explosion on Tuesday, June 25. The incident occurred near Hotel Presidential at around 9:45 am, causing panic and chaos in the area.

Eyewitnesses reported that the victim’s body was quickly removed from the scene as security forces arrived in large numbers. “The corpse of the victim was taken away hurriedly,” one witness told the Nigerian Tribune.

An anonymous source described how the protest, which caused significant traffic disruptions, was part of a march organized by supporters of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The protesters were defying a police order to voice their grievances over the ongoing local government tenure extension crisis in Rivers State. On Monday, June 24, about 100 protesters carried placards with various messages near the post office along Azikiwe Road in Port Harcourt.

This tragic event adds to the political tensions that have been unsettling Rivers State under Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration. Tony Okocha, chairman of the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee, has called for a state of emergency to prevent further violence and unrest in the state.

Governor Fubara has issued a new directives to the 23 local government council caretaker committee chairmen. Following the sealing off of the local government Secretariats by the Nigerian Police Force, Fubara has ordered the chairmen to operate from any location to ensure continued governance.
