Matsunaga opened the scoring in the first half, and Hijikata extended Japan’s lead after the break. Despite a determined effort from Nigeria, including a composed finish by Olushola Shobowale in stoppage time, it was not enough to overcome Japan’s advantage.

In the 13th minute, Hijikata almost increased Japan’s lead when she nearly capitalized on a defensive error by goalkeeper Faith Omilana. However, Comfort Folorunsho’s timely clearance kept the Falconets in the game.
