A former four-term member of the House of Representatives for the Bagwai/Shanono Federal Constituency in Kano, Farouk Lawan, who was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment for demanding and accepting a $500,000 bribe, has regained his freedom.
Lawan was convicted of soliciting a $3 million bribe from Nigerian billionaire oil tycoon, Femi Otedola, while serving as chairman of the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee investigating fuel subsidy fraud in 2012.

The Supreme Court upheld his conviction on 26 January 2024.
In a brief statement following his release, Hon. Farouk expressed gratitude and stated that this marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. He thanked Allah for sustaining him during his time in prison.
“Today marks the beginning of a new chapter in my life as I step out of Kuje Custodial Centre, with a heart full of gratitude to Allah SWT for seeing me through this trial.

“My gratitude is deep. I am alive, in good health, and in high spirits, ready to reunite with my family, friends, and associates. I do not take that for granted.
“I remain grateful and indebted to my family and friends who stood by me through this particularly trying phase of my life.”
