The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has unveiled Finidi George as the new coach of the Super Eagles. George, a former Ajax star, was appointed two weeks ago, but the specifics of his contract were not revealed until the unveiling ceremony. He has signed a one-year contract with an option for an additional year.

George will be assisted by a team of experienced coaches, including Daniel Amokachi, his former Super Eagles teammate, and Benjamin James, a former Shooting Stars player based in Germany. Mehmet Ozturk will serve as an analyst, while Chima Onyeike, a Netherland-based fitness trainer, will also assist George. Olatunji Baruwa will return as the goalkeeper trainer.

George’s appointment has been met with mixed reactions, with some fans expressing concerns over his lack of experience as a head coach. However, many believe that his experience as a player and assistant coach will serve him well in his new role.
The Super Eagles will face South Africa on June 7 and Benin on June 10 in their World Cup qualifiers. George’s first target is to win both games and secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
He has also promised to prioritize performance over immediate financial rewards, saying “The salary is good enough for me, it’s not as much as that of (Jose) Peseiro. Money is good, but if you add value to what you do, the money will come.”
