Folashodun Shonubi: Meet the CBN’s new acting governor
Following the immediate suspension of Central Bank of Nigeria Governor Godwin Emefiele, his Deputy (Operations Directorate), Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, has been appointed to serve in his stead.
On Friday night, President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele. Willie Bassey, Director of Information for the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, issued a statement announcing the suspension.

Bassey explained that the suspension of the CBN governor was the result of both an ongoing investigation and a planned reform of the financial sector.
On October 17, 2018, Shonubi, the new acting CBN governor, assumed the position of Operations Directorate.
The date of his birth is March 7, 1962.
The University of Lagos awarded him a Master’s degree in both Business Administration and Mechanical Engineering. He has over 30 years of professional banking experience.
From 2012 to 2018, he was the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System PLC.

Mr. Shonubi was Executive Director, Information Technology and Operations at Union Bank of Nigeria Plc; a member of the Board of Union Homes; and Director, Information Technology and Corporate Services at Renaissance Securities Nigeria Limited, with responsibility for the Group’s IT infrastructure in Africa, prior to his appointment as Managing Director of NIBSS PLC.
Between 1999 and 2007, he served as Deputy General Manager at MBC International and oversaw their IT operational platforms, as Vice President at First City Monument Bank Limited, and as Executive Director at Ecobank Nigeria Limited.
Mr. Shonubi was also the head of Treasury Operations at Citibank Nigeria Limited from 1990 to 1993. He has served on several subcommittees of the Bankers’ Committee, including the subcommittee on ethics and professionalism.
