A former governor of Anambra State, Chinwoke Mbadinuju is dead.

 

 

Former governor of the state of Anambra, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, has been confirmed dead, Ejes Gist News Nigeria reports.

 

On Tuesday, Mbadinuju reportedly passed away at the National Hospital in Abuja at the age of 78.

Chinwoke Mbadinuju, affectionately known as “Odera,  is a Nigerian politician who served as Anambra State governor from 1999 to 2003. On February 20, 1947, he was born in Nnewi, Anambra State, Nigeria.

Mbadinuju earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and a doctorate in law from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom. He also went to law school in Nigeria and was admitted to the Nigerian Bar in 1976.

On the Peoples Democratic Party platform, he was elected governor of Anambra State in 1999. (PDP). He was widely criticised during his tenure for alleged corruption and mismanagement of state resources. He was also accused of failing to provide the people of the state with basic amenities and infrastructure.

Political unrest marred Mbadinuju’s administration, including the impeachment of the state deputy governor, Dr. Chudi Nwike, and the removal of the speaker of the state House of Assembly, Chief Chukwuemeka Ezeife. He was also accused of funding the Bakassi Boys, a private militia group that carried out extrajudicial killings in the state.

After leaving office in 2003, Mbadinuju joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and ran unsuccessfully for the presidency of Nigeria in 2007.

 

 

Tuesday’s family statement signed by his son, Mr. Cheta Mbadinuju, revealed that he passed away after a brief illness.
