Salaries: UNIJOS issues stay-at-home order to members

The University of Jos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Friday gave its members the go-ahead to remain at home indefinitely while waiting for the Federal Government to pay back withheld salaries.

This information was provided by the branch in a statement that was made available to newsmen and was signed by Prof. Lazarus Maigoro, the branch’s chairman.

This online newspaper had reported on Thursday how the government had paid the striking university lecturers half their salaries.

Part of the statement reads, “One of the issues agreed upon at the meeting was that 50% of the backlog of eight months’ worth of our withheld salaries would be paid to our members immediately, but as of the time of writing this press release, the office of the Accountant General of the Federation had only paid our members’ prorated October salaries for 17 days.

Our members in the University of Jos believed that the Federation’s Accountant General had insulted them by continuing to stay for the past nine months.

Is the Minister of Labour really the Accountant General of the Federation’s boss? Will the Accountant General of the Federation comply if the Minister of Agriculture instructs him today to withhold the pay of the staff members of the Agricultural Research Institutes who have been on strike for more than a year?

“We question why Ngige is so adamant about delaying members’ pay whereas employees of other Agricultural Research Institutes have been on strike for almost a year and are still receiving their paychecks on time. Does this rule only apply to members?

We are also aware that Chris Ngige, the minister of labour and employment, requested in a memo to the Accountant General that he pay our members just as of the date when the strike was suspended.
