People’s Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain and former House of Representatives candidate in Ekiti State, Lere Olayinka, has called on President Bola Tinubu to sack the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari, over the ongoing scarcity of petrol in the country.

Olayinka, a media aide to former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, described as “funny and laughable” the NNPCL’s claim that rain, lightning, and thunderstorms were responsible for the fuel scarcity, questioning when such weather conditions began to cause fuel shortages in Nigeria or anywhere else in the world.
The entire country is facing a severe fuel shortage, with most parts of the nation experiencing scarcity for more than two months. In many areas, Nigerians are purchasing petrol at exorbitant prices, ranging from ₦1,200.00 to ₦1,500.00 per liter.

During a press conference in Abuja, NNPCL’s Vice President (Downstream), Dapo Segun, attributed the fuel scarcity to recent rains, lightning, and thunderstorms.
In response, Olayinka stated in Abuja on Wednesday that such an excuse from the NNPCL was a clear sign that those managing the organization were clueless about finding solutions to the persistent fuel shortage.
He said, “Previously, Nigerians heard the dry season as an excuse for the lack of electricity. Now, rain, lightning, and thunderstorms are excuses for the lack of fuel. What a shame! This, to me, is the height of cluelessness demonstrated by Mele Kyari and his team.
In the interest of Nigerians, who have been enduring the pains of this over two-month-long fuel scarcity, President Tinubu should show the NNPCL GMD and his team the exit door so that competent people can be appointed to run the organization.

Describing Mele Kyari as “Mr. Promise and Fail,” Olayinka recalled that when Kyari took office in 2019, he boasted that all four of the country’s refineries would be operational before the end of President Buhari’s administration in 2023. “It is now 2024, and not a single one of the four refineries is working,” Olayinka added.
He concluded by saying, “How can the same Mele Kyari still be directing the affairs of the NNPCL? I believe President Tinubu needs to demonstrate his seriousness about fixing Nigeria by removing this obviously incompetent management team led by Mele Kyari.”
