Edo Varsity Sacks 13 Over Extortion, Sexual Harassment

 

Ambrose Ali University (AAU), owned by the state of Edo, has dismissed thirteen academic and non-academic employees.

 

The affected employees were terminated for alleged offences including age forgery, fraud, insubordination, extortion, and sexual harassment.

On Monday, the vice chancellor presented the committee’s report to members of the AAU Special Intervention Team (SIT).

Professor Asomwe The university’s vice chancellor, Sunny Adagbonyin, stated that the decision to terminate the erring staff was based on the recommendations of the institution’s disciplinary committee, which found them guilty of the offences.

 

The VC added that the disciplinary committee had provided the affected employees with a fair hearing and recommended that “the criminal aspect of the disengage staff offence be reported to security personnel.”

 

According to him, a lecturer and an associate professor were fired for collecting unapproved student levies.

Prof. Adagbonyin stated that the lecturer in charge of nursing science was recommended for termination after being found guilty of extorting N32,000 and N52,000 from students, respectively.

 

Others are from Medical Laboratory Sciences, the Department of Nursing, the Department of Engineering, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Political Science, and the former Director of the university farm.

The VC stated that a professor charged with sexual harassment was also terminated.

 

He said, “The lecturer claimed to have only made advances, but he went to the girl’s church to beg for forgiveness.”

“The USDC has concluded 132 of the 209 received disciplinary cases, while 77 cases remain pending,” he added.

 

The victims were safeguarded and assigned to a different lecturer.
