Nigerian comedian and entertainer Gbenga Adeyinka has urged youthful presidential candidates from the 2023 elections to shift their political aspirations towards the National Assembly instead of the presidency. In a recent podcast interview with *TheCable*, Adeyinka advised prominent figures like Peter Obi of the Labour Party, Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress, and Kingsley Moghalu to focus on legislative roles in the Senate or House of Representatives.
Adeyinka argued that having such influential individuals in legislative positions would strengthen decision-making processes and ensure that any sitting president approaches policy-making more cautiously. He emphasized the importance of gaining political experience at the grassroots level, stating that Nigerian politics follows a “bottom-up structure.”
He remarked that while many young candidates have made their bids for the presidency, their contributions might be more impactful in legislative roles, where they could work on reforming Nigeria’s laws and governance. “If Peter Obi becomes president of Nigeria with the same structure we have in place, there’s nothing he’s going to do,” Adeyinka concluded.
The entertainer also mentioned that political structures and professional politicians often make it difficult for fresh candidates to secure high-level executive positions like the presidency, suggesting that younger contenders should first gain influence and experience in the legislature.
