If enacted into law, the bill brings about substantial changes, with severe consequences for individuals involved in LGBTQ activities. Convictions related to identifying as gay could lead to a three-year jail term.
Those considered “promoters” of LGBTQ issues might face up to five years in prison, and engaging in same-sex relations could result in a five-year sentence, an increase from the previous three years stipulated by existing legislation.

The bill not only prohibits LGBTQ activities but also makes it illegal to promote, advocate, or provide funding for them, according to reports from Citinewsroom. Furthermore, the legislation criminalizes marrying or intending to marry someone who has undergone gender reassignment surgery, with a potential penalty of up to five years behind bars.

Addressing the issue of “gross indecency in public,” the bill takes a stringent stance on any public displays of affection between individuals of the same sex or those identifying as a gender different from their biological sex. The legislation also extends to criminalizing “cross-dressing,” enabling the prosecution of individuals dressing in a manner perceived as different from their biological sex.
As the bill progresses through the legislative process, it has sparked debates and raised concerns about human rights and the potential impact on the LGBTQ community in Ghana. The country awaits the final decision on the bill, which could have far-reaching consequences for the LGBTQ community and those advocating for their rights.
