Godswill Akpabio Opens Up Amid Plans to Impeach Him, Orders Investigation
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has dismissed rumours of an alleged impeachment plot against him, describing the claims as “fake news” and “mischief.
Akpabio, who addressed the issue during a Senate plenary session on Wednesday, called for an immediate investigation into the origins of the rumour.
Akpabio directed the Senate Committee on Special Duties to probe the source and promoters of the alleged plot. The committee is expected to report back to the Senate within 24 hours.

“We are here, sitting peacefully, doing our work, oblivious to the mischief going on behind us,” Akpabio said during the plenary. “I believe this should be referred to the Committee on Special Duties. The fake news should be investigated, and we expect a report within 24 hours.”
Akpabio further speculated that the rumours were part of a broader attempt to attract traffic and revenue, particularly from online platforms. He suggested that those spreading the false claims might be using AI to distort information to garner attention and financial gain.

The fake news is either created using AI or manipulated to drive traffic,” Akpabio said, amidst laughter from his colleagues. “I understand they are paid by YouTube if they generate high traffic. Whoever created this fake news must be profiting, but I want the public to know this is false, and the Senate is stable. There is no issue of impeachment.”
Earlier reports circulating online claimed that the National Assembly complex resembled a “war zone,” with the Department of State Services (DSS) allegedly taking over amid speculation of an impeachment move by some unnamed Northern senators. However, these reports have been firmly denied by the Senate President.
The Senate’s response is aimed at maintaining order and transparency within the chamber as it seeks to address the spread of misinformation.
